As we approach Thanksgiving in Canada, I always start to think about everything that I’m thankful for.
Soon my mind starts to wonder from being thankful to thoughts around Gratitude.
I have a confession. I’ve struggled with the word Gratitude. I’ve always secretly rolled my eyes at the practice of gratitude and having a gratitude journal.
If you’ve been following me and reading my blogs, then you’ll know how much I adore Oprah. She practices gratitude and has a Gratitude Journal.
Still, I simply don’t know why, but I just think Gratitude seems staid and stagnant.
Am I the only one here?
Here’s another confession.
Gratitude is one of the values of Pinkpreneurs.
And still, I don’t love the idea of Gratitude. I do, however, love the word and the idea of “Appreciation”.
I decided to get to the bottom of this feeling and do a little research.
Here are the definitions of both Gratitude and Appreciation from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Gratitude - a feeling of appreciation or thanks
Appreciation - a feeling or expression of admiration, approval, or gratitude
Well, that’s interesting. Gratitude is the feeling of appreciation.
Appreciation just feels more fluid and changing. What we appreciate will appreciate. I love the idea of change and growth.
I also love the concept that I first heard from Lynne Twist “What you appreciate, appreciates.” Of course, she was being interviewed by Oprah.
Ah, I can see now why I love the energy of Appreciation over Gratitude.
And yet, they are so intertwined.
As you celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving with your loved ones, what are you thankful for?
If you’re spending time looking for what you appreciate in your life, please also take the time, to go inside and focus on all the wonderful aspects of you.
Appreciate your strengths, your genius, your talents and your gifts in this world.
If what you appreciate, appreciates, then you’ll have more strength, genius, talents and gifts in the world, right?
